Story
Portland Community College kicked off its 50th Anniversary celebration with a series of events, volunteer opportunities and stories from the countless individuals for whom PCC means one thing: Opportunity.
Switchyard gave PCC’s students, staff, alumni and other fans a voice by creating an interactive story wall where fans can share stories, images and video of what Opportunity means to them.

Interactive
PCC selected Switchyard to conceive and deliver a microsite unlike anything they’d seen in the world of higher education. Unlike most colleges’ primary websites, including their own, the College’s microsite is all about giving voice to users who have grown accustomed to simply logging in to receive information and register for classes. One of our goals was to flip the script and use technology to listen to our community—and let our fans start conversations amongst themselves.
A few highlights:
- Designed animations using the magical jQuery plugin Isotope, which provides an interactive toolset that’s accessible on mobile and desktop devices.
- Combined the story wall with other essential content: a blog, volunteer sign-ups and events to name a few.
- Made it easy to share stories on Facebook, Twitter and over email.

Community
The 50th Anniversary has been an engaging way to remind Portlanders of the incredible resource we enjoy here, but our work continues as we transform the temporary microsite into a lasting property for PCC. Throughout 2012 and beyond we look forward to working with PCC to develop the Opportunity brand in support of community outreach for years to come.
